What is a cross tab?

Wikipedia defines a cross tab as follows:

"A cross tabulation (often abbreviated as cross tab) displays the joint distribution of two or more variables. They are usually presented as a contingency table in a matrix format. Whereas a frequency distribution provides the distribution of one variable, a contingency table describes the distribution of two or more variables simultaneously. Each cell shows the number of respondents that gave a specific combination of responses, that is, each cell contains a single cross tabulation."

For the most part, a cross tab is a way of comparing response breakdowns within a question based upon data from another question. So if you ask for the gender of a respondent in one question, you can then use a cross tab to break down the responses in a further question by males vs. females.

Cross tabs are a very common analysis and comparison tool in survey research because they add value and depth to your data, and are very easy to use and understand. With InstantSurvey Professional, you can very easily set up any number of cross tabs in your custom reports.

Here is an example of a cross tab set up in InstantSurvey:

How do I create and use mini-templates?

You don’t have to re-invent the wheel every time you create a survey with InstantSurvey. Our application allows you to save questions and question sets that you use on a regular basis in a template library. You can even use this within the same survey like a Copy-and-Paste feature.

Here’s how...

  • While you are in the InstantSurvey Edit Survey page, select the page, category or question you wish to save as a mini-template.
  • In the Option box that pops up to the left, choose Save as Mini-template.
  • When the Template window pops up, simply give the mini-template the name of your choice.

  • You can then add that mini-template in your current survey or any other surveys by selecting the location where you want to add it.
  • In the Option box that pops up to the left, choose Add – Mini-template
  • Then simply select the mini-template you wish to add.

It’s as easy as that! In addition, you will find a large supply of pre-built common survey questions already saved as mini-templates in the InstantSurvey library.

Contact if you have any questions about how to use mini-templates.

Can I include videos in my survey? If so, how?

Yes, you can upload videos directly into InstantSurvey surveys. You can post them directly from Google or YouTube Videos, or from any hosted location of your own. Another easy option is to upload a video from your computer into your InstantSurvey file database - we'll host it for you so you can use it in your surveys.

Uploading a video hosted in another internet location

  1. Simply go to the website where the video is located and copy the "embed object" HTML version, which is usually included on the webpage.
  2. Copy and paste the HTML code directly into your survey. You can add videos to any element of your survey, but you may want to choose to use a "Category" to paste the coding so you can use the "Question" segment to ask questions about the video. To do this, add a new Category, go into the Advanced Editing Options (shown as a button on the right with three dots), click HTML and then paste the coding. To ensure that it is embedded correctly, click "Preview" to show the video.

Uploading a video from your InstantSurvey files

  1. To upload your file into InstantSurvey, go to Home>Your Files>Images/Multimedia and click "New" at the bottom. Browse for the file and let InstantSurvey auto-select your file type. The file will show up in your list along with your other files, but keep in mind that the Preview function will not work for video clips.
  2. Scroll over the newly added file, right click and select "copy shortcut". This shortcut represents the online location of that file, which you should save for future use.
  3. Next, you must develop the HTML required to embed your video directly into your survey content. Luckily, with sites like, it is relatively simple. Choose a media type that your respondents have when possible so the video will work when they fill out the survey. The server name will be and the file path will be the copied shortcut from the online location of the file you previously copied. Be sure to erase the first part of the shortcut ( This will then create the appropriate HTML that you need to embed the video.

*InstantSurvey can host almost any type of file, including HD! The limitation is what users can actually play back.

How do I import my survey questions directly from a Word document?

With the InstantSurvey Quick Question Import tool, you can take a survey directly from Word and turn it into your own online survey. The key is to ensure that you use the correct formatting.

The Quick Question Import tool can be found in the Survey Creation Wizard or on the Survey Editing page by selecting any survey item and choosing 'Add – Quick Text Import'.

Preparing your Word document for the Quick Question Import is quite simple. Begin all questions as normal, start responses with a "*" and use "Enter" to skip a line for open text responses. Here is an example:

      What is your gender?

      What is your name?

      What is your favorite color?

You can then edit or add to your questions once in the Survey editing window.

Can I restrict open-text responses to certain formats, such as for passwords, email addresses and zip codes?

Yes, and here is how:

Step-by-step instructions on using Script Editor with open text responses:

  1. Go into the survey editing window to access your new, draft, or finished survey.
  2. Make sure you have a text box survey response set up where you want to require a particular response format.
  3. Scroll over "quick edit" on the top menu and then click "script editor". A list of your survey questions and responses will come up.
  4. Click "add script" next to the response.
  5. Make sure "onValidate" is selected from the drop-down menu.
  6. Copy and paste the script (shown below) for the desired text response format.

Exactly 5 digits for zip code responses

if (thiselement.value.length!=5){
   alert('Please enter a 5-digit zip code');

Ensuring the respondent enters a proper email address format

var str = thiselement.value;
var regex = /^([\w-]+(?:\.[\w-]+)*)@((?:[\w-]+\.)*\w[\w-]{0,66})\.([a-z]{2,6}(?:\.[a-z]{2})?)$/i;
if (!regex.test(str)) {
  alert('Please enter a valid email address');

Provide a User ID or password to continue with the survey

The accepted ID values for this example are test, 12345, and 54321. To add your passwords or IDs, replace those values in the text below.

if (thiselement.value== "test" ||
thiselement.value== 12345 ||
thiselement.value== 54321){
  alert('Invalid ID');

How can I use global respondent panels with InstantSurvey?

When you program your survey within InstantSurvey, you have access to a global panel of respondents to which you can distribute your survey and gather responses. If you contact us and let us know who you want to target (age, gender, region, etc.), we will provide you with a quote. If you accept our pricing for that audience, we will handle the details within your account so you can focus on the real-time results of your study.

Can I limit respondent answers to numeric values only?

Yes, you most definitely can. Using a simple script in InstantSurvey, you can restrict respondents to entering only numeric values within an open-text response box.

  1. To do this, go to the Edit Survey page for your survey and add the open-text response option to your question.
  2. Then, go to "Edit Script" from the "More Actions" drop-down menu.
  3. Find your question and click "[add script]".
  4. A drop-down menu will appear along with an open text box. Choose "Custom" from the drop-down menu and then type in "onKeyPress" in the small box that appears to the right.
  5. Then, in the large text box below, paste in the following script:

    if (event.keyCode < 48 || event.keyCode > 57) {event.returnValue = false; alert('Please enter numbers only.');}

  6. Lastly, click 'Save' at the top.

Can I prevent people from answering the survey more than once?

Yes. InstantSurvey's targeted e-mail distributions automatically ensure that respondents only complete the survey once. With single URL distributions, InstantSurvey can set persistent cookies in order to block respondents from responding multiple times as well.

Can results be exported into Excel?

Yes, the results from your InstantSurvey account can easily be exported into Excel as well as SPSS.

Does InstantSurvey offer SSL Encryption?

If I sign up and decide to cancel my subscription, can I get a refund?
